Business Before Employees Before Customers

Employees should always come second, and that’s right before the customers coming in third. The better you treat your employees, the better they will treat your customers, typically. So that’s how you take care of the second and third most important thing about your business. It‘s also important to note that your employees are not family, they are the life and blood within your vessel of an organization. If you do not treat the blood in your veins well, it can shut down your entire ecosystem. That is why you put your employees well-being before your customers.

Your business’s why is the only thing more important than your employees and customers. The why is aka your business’s purpose but it is also known as your company’s mission statement. A company’s mission is also in tandem with its vision. The vision is simply the overall goal. The mission and vision serve the same purpose as a company compass or a guide. A company’s vision should be written broad and virtually unnattainable so that you will always stay in business. Everyone including the employees and customers should know the purpose (mission) of the organization. Few rarely do.

Your purpose should never be to make as much money as possible. I’ve had a few potential clients who’ve come to me with that reasoning being their why. My response is always the same – you won’t last. Without a mission, no matter the accolades and awards received, you can never feel successful or accomplished. Plus, without a mission, the employees have no direction. Without a compass you get lost. You might stumble across a few dollars, yet a missonless organization can never prosper. That does not mean you can’t start an organization without one and eventually grow into one. However, you must eventually decide upon one.

Use this example in your own life. A purposeless life is one that is unfulfilling and unrewarding. If you don’t have one, you should seek it. Let your curiosity drive you into understanding why you wake up every single day. There’s definitely a reason. Figure it out and apply energy and persistence towards it.

If you are building a business without goals and a purpose, it’s time to do so – to benefit your employees and customers. Because when they know and understand it, that’s when they can truly support it.
